PERSONAL QUALITIES REQUIRED

Overseas lifestyles and habits are vastly different from those in North America. For that reason, it takes a specific type of personality to thrive in the ESL environment.  Successful teachers possess a genuine respect for, and interest in, other cultures.  They enjoy meeting new people, love to travel, and really take to new experiences and challenges.  Schools are looking for a casual, yet professional appearance.  Promptness and references from both employers and friends are essential.  Teachers must speak English as their first language.  However, a second language is NOT required..

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Educational requirements to teach ESL overseas vary from country to country.  Generally, being a native English speaker and having a university degree of any kind will put you in good standing to be hired.  Both your hiring and salary potential are increased by having an ESL-type Certificate.  In Korea, teachers are required to have a university degree and be a native English speaker, while in some areas of China a high school diploma and being a native English speaker will get you a position.  Countries such as Japan, Saudi Arabia and Mexico often require you to be a native English speaker, have a university degree, professional teaching certification (TESOL/TECOL, CELTA, ‘OE ESL’, TEFL etc), and preferably some experience.

OTHER CRITERIA

You must be at least 18 years of age. With some schools, you must be 21 years of age. You must be a native English speaker and possess a valid passport: Canada, US, UK, Australia and New Zealand citizenship.

We will do our best to match you with a school according to your qualifications, age and experience. Most contracts are for one year. Classroom instructions vary depending upon the country, the school, the agreement and/or the pay. You are welcome to contact us to help you change schools or countries after you finish your first contract or to stay for an extended term.
